Industry experts assert that travel and tourism is being heavily driven by a destination’s ability to deliver authentic, unique experiences. Why? Because the digital revolution changed everything. Using their computers and cell phones, people can sightsee across the world from their living rooms. So when they physically go, they are seeking so much more. They want to immerse themselves in the local culture, traditions, and activities that make a destination distinctive and memorable.
According to McKinsey & Company, travelers spend approximately $1.1 trillion to $1.3 trillion on experiences, accounting for about 30% of the experience market. Paid, structured tourist activities represent roughly 25% of global experience spending, totaling about $250 billion to $310 billion annually.
“Experiences are set to become an integral part of the travel industry, reshaping how travelers engage with destinations,” according to Skift’s State of Travel 2024 report. Millennials and Gen Z appear to be leading the charge on the trend. Approximately 71% of respondents to a recent survey in those two age groups said they would forego daily luxuries such as coffee shop orders and food delivery to save money for travel experiences.1
Travelers are increasingly motivated to engage with local customs, food, art, and outdoor adventures that offer genuine interactions. Destinations like Kyoto, Japan, attract visitors for traditional tea ceremonies, cultural festivals, and historical temples, creating immersive travel experiences that go beyond typical tourist attractions.
Vienna has introduced the “Heartbeat Streets” initiative, encouraging visitors to explore lesser-known neighborhoods to experience the city’s authentic local culture. This program promotes tourism that positively impacts local communities, offering travelers deeper, more meaningful engagements with Vienna’s diverse cultural landscape.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand promotes the country’s rich culinary heritage through various initiatives, including cooking classes, food festivals, and culinary tours. Travelers are encouraged to explore local markets, participate in traditional Thai cooking classes, and experience regional specialties, providing an authentic taste of Thailand’s diverse food culture.
